Sam and the Moon Dog

The first story in The Mind’s Eye is Sam and the Moon Dog, based on the nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle, the Cat and the Fiddle. Sam meets the little dog, the jumping cow and the fiddling cat, while other creatures from the sky include the great bear Urs, and his daughter, the little bear Ursula.

It starts like this:

Sam woke up suddenly. He opened his eyes. Through the door, he could see a crack of light from the hall; everything else was dark. He listened: something has woken him up! But all seemed peaceful and quiet – just the gentle hum of a car driving down the road – and then silence.

And then, faint but clear in the night, there it was!
“Woof! Woof! Ha-ha; Woof! Woof! Ha-ha; Woof! Woof! Ha-ha!”

It sounded like a little dog. It sounded like a little dog laughing. And the noise was coming from somewhere up in the sky!
